DanceVote 2010
Even
if you don’t want to get involved it is worth watching the great dance
video at http://www.danceuk.org
DanceVote 2010 is the national
advocacy campaign to put dance on the agenda of our future MPs. If you
love dance – have danced, dance now, want to dance or love watching
dance – this is the campaign for you to join.
Have a look at this: http://www.dancevote2010.co.uk
They want you to write to your local political candidates who are
standing for election and asked them how they will support dance and
the arts if they become MPs. With difficult funding decisions ahead, it
is important to act now and tell our local politicians why dance is
important to us as voters and how public funding for dance offers value
for money and real benefits to local communities.
Will you
e-mail your local candidates too and tell them why dance is important
to you?
It only takes a couple of minutes and
is very easy. Just go to http://www.dancevote2010.co.uk/contact/get-involved
and it will compose most of the letter and route it to your local
politicians for you.

Try Something New?
Blues
Fancy
trying the blues? Workshop during the day and fabulous music
to dance to from 8pm!
Blissfully
Blues On Tour - In Dartford! Saturday May 22nd
Details at http://www.jivenites.co.uk/events.php
Contra Dance
Imagine a dance where you don’t need to go with a partner and you don’t
need to learn any footwork. All the men and women line up and the
caller gives simple instructions from the stage; then the music starts
and you get to dance with lots of different partners. You don’t even
need to think about what move to use next as the caller tells you what
to do during the dance. No, it’s not Modern Jive! It’s American
Style Contra Dancing!
Contra dancing? American-influenced barn dancing with attitude!
Saturday
17th
April - Ashford, Kent - Contra Dance with great live band Chesapeake and American caller Henry
Morgenstein
It starts with a free
beginners’ workshop at 7:30pm so everyone can join in and have fun.
Plus afternoon workshops!

And a quick note about one happening this weekend:
Advance
& Dance Weekend,
17-18 April 2010, St
Neots, UK
An
entire
weekend aimed at
the advancement of your dance: mix & match to suit your needs. Four
workshops covering Musicality & Style, Connection, Unity &
Drama,
Beyond the Blues, and Advanced Dips & Drops. On Saturday evening
there is a
glamorously themed freestyle event and on Sunday, the regular class
session
will become an extended freestyle session.
The entire
weekend is aimed
at experienced dancers. Those who are becoming bored with moves
focussed
classes, or feel that they don't benefit any more from learning moves
alone.
Each of the workshops is technique focussed, improving your all-round
dancing.

organisers:
Is your event listed at modernjive.com?
If not, please send me the details (with up to 500 characters
of description).
(But please check first at modernjive.com - you may be
listed already!)
We do not list
individual workshops or freestyles - they are listed well at lots
of other sites (see the bottom of this note for a list).
Events in this list are Competitions, Dance
Holidays, and major Weekend Events: ones with multiple workshops from
multiple
teachers, together with an evening dance.

LeRoc
is NOT a Brand Name
OK, this shouldn't be news, but it seems that it is to a lot of people!
I keep seeing articles, Web pages, etc. with sentences such as “Modern
Jive classes and events are often franchised or run under various brand
names - including "Ceroc", "LeRoc", "Mo'Jive", "Jive Nation…”.
LeRoc is not a brand
name! It is the original name Michel Lau
gave to this dance style. He wanted it to be in the public
domain, and various legal challenges over the years have confirmed that
it is. LeRoc is a word that anyone can use, like waltz or tango,
to describe a type of dance. Anyone can use the name LeRoc in
the name of their club.
There is also confusion about the LeRoc
Modern Jive Federation. It is not a business, it does not run
any classes and it has no control of the use of the word LeRoc.
Some of its members use the name LeRoc in the name of their club, some
of them don’t; and there are clubs that are not members of the
Federation that do use LeRoc in their name. Whether or not you use the
word LeRoc in the name of your club you could benefit by being a member
- check it out at http://www.leroc.org.uk.
I hope that will help to remove some of the confusion :-)
